January 4, 2010

It didn’t even occur to me to do a year-end list until I saw them in all the magazines.  That’s the thing about being in school; the end of everyone else’s year is my middle.  Here are some of my favorite things about 2009 in terms of music.

  • the Green Day show at Madison Square Garden

I wrote all about it over at Nothing Wrong With Me.  Suffice it to say I had been waiting for a chance to see Green Day live ever since American Idiot took over my ears in 2004, and it was stunning.  One of the best nights of my life.  I can’t wait to go again.

  • finally getting a copy of Suffer and Tim

If FYE didn’t sell used cds, they would have nothing good.  Suffer works fine despite a scratch and was even reasonably priced.  Between that and getting to listen to “God, what a mess/ on the ladder of success/ when you take one step and miss the whole first rung” anytime I like, I’m definitely happy.

  • the Beatles remasters

I’m still floored by the clarity of the sound.  It’s like being in the recording studio with them, or having a tiny concert in your head.  There’s no distance between you and the songs.  All music should be that pure.

  • reading Gimme Something Better

This entry explains it.  I couldn’t put the thing down.  It’s fascinating, especially if you’re a fan of East Bay punk.

Complete with virtual Hilly Krystal sitting in the office.  For a punk fan born too late to see where it all started it’s the next best thing.  I could sit there for hours just deciphering graffiti.

2009 was pretty cool for music.  Here’s hoping 2010 turns out even better.
