I tend to go on musical binges.  I don’t listen to a band for a while, but suddenly I rediscover them and fall in love all over again.   Soon I’m playing every song I can find in my collection.  When that fails me I turn to youtube.  I just found a video for “I’ll Get You” by the Beatles that I plan to play incessantly.  I’m a huge Beatles fan, and I don’t think I’ve ever heard that song before.  Needless to say I’m ecstatic.

Even timeless songs like “Yesterday” sometimes escape my notice.  I think I geek out on the Beatles for hours to make up for that.  How else would I remember how much I adore “We Can Work it Out”?  Rediscovering old songs lets me sink into them and get lost, which is as close to nirvana as music can get.

It’s best when the song catches me unawares.  I keep my ipod on shuffle most of the time for precisely that reason.  It means that the sun-drenched guitar of “Footsteps on My Ceiling” by Social Distortion can surprise me in the middle of homework and charm my ears completely.  It puts a giant goofy grin on my face, like a massive sugar rush.

It’s a rare and wonderful feeling.  Now you know why I spend so much time with earphones glued to my head.
