I Am Intrigued

December 12, 2008

Brody Dalle’s new band Spinnerette has an EP out!  It’s called Ghetto Love.  You can listen to the whole thing here.  My first thought on hearing it was “bleagh, techno!”  Which goes to show that first impressions can be terribly misguided things.  I reminded myself that just because Spinnerette and the Distillers share a member doesn’t mean they share a sound.

That said, the EP is solid.  The first song, “Ghetto Love” is a bit too clubby for my liking, but it’s still not bad.  The video for it has giant spiders that almost made me run from the laptop screaming.  Don’t worry, they don’t stick around.  Otherwise I wouldn’t be typing right now.

“Valium Nights” is gorgeous.  It’s the complete opposite of Brody’s old gut-busting scream style of singing, and it just wraps you up in textures of sound.  You could get lost in this thing.  It’s that good.

“Distorting a Code” is a light, spacey song that seems to drift between your ears.  Perfect for aimless wanderings when you’ve got nothing else to do.

“Bury My Heart”  is a mix of things.  It starts off gritty, with a twanging bassline, but the vocals are slow and smooth.  They actually go very well together.   I think that’s my favorite thing so far about Spinnerette.  The music isn’t ear candy.  You have to sit and sift through it and think.  More, please!
