Red White and Blue Ramblings

July 5, 2008

Technically the 4th of July was yesterday, but I thought I’d share this anyway. It’s Jimi Hendrix’s version of the Star Spangled Banner, and it’s my favorite. I just love the special effects he puts into it, almost as if the War of 1812 were actually being fought onstage.

The whole Woodstock counterculture thing got me thinking. Even though the age of peace, love, and lots of drugs has passed, it’s important to keep a little bit of that subversive spirit alive. That’s where bands like Bad Religion and more recently, Green Day come in. They write songs that challenge the culture and mindset of America. It’s not about politics. It’s about thinking for yourself. Nothing is more American than that. That said, here is my idea of a fourth of July soundtrack.

  • “American Idiot”- Green Day
  • “21st Century Digital Boy”- Bad Religion
  • “London’s Burning”- The Clash
  • “Holiday”- Green Day
  • “Androgynous”- The Replacements
  • “Live Again (The Fall of Man)”- Bad Religion

The best part is, because this is America, I can say this kind of thing without a visit from the secret police. Happy 4th!
