It’s Like Pulling Teeth

June 28, 2008

I’m pretty picky about music. At least, I know what I don’t like. So I went just the tiniest bit crazy while stuck listening to Sam’s Town recently. In principle I fully support people listening to whatever music makes them happy. In practice, I wish they would use headphones. I wish I could use headphones, but I doubt corporate policy would allow that kind of thing. (Hooray for being a cubicle rat). Still, every once in a while something happens to restore my faith in music.

One day towards the end of school I wandered into the library for some coffee, braced for the usual Weezer song or cut from the Juno soundtrack. Instead I heard a riff I knew and loved. It was Green Day‘s “Pulling Teeth,” and it made me so happy I stood in line grinning as I soaked in every note. At least someone appreciated good music.

I’m still going to cringe every time I hear rap-metal crashing out the speakers at some trendy clothing store, but I’ll shrug it off. Someone, somewhere, will be blasting the Clash, or the Ramones, or My Chemical Romance. Hopefully someone within earshot.
